In "Cata-what? Catalyst!", the students
discovered the effects of a catalyst. In this lab, they used an enzyme in beef
liver to break down hydrogen peroxide. They also used this lab to investigate
how surface area affects a reaction. They used one "whole" piece of
liver, and ground up the other piece.
Kyle thinks he's Elvis. (Not just the
sideburns - he's emulating a picture of Elvis on my calendar behind him!) |
I waited for over a minute for Amy to
move her hand away from her face. Instead, she looks at the camera! |
"Ha Ha Ha!! Take that, you
dirty, slimy, little liver! Bad liver! Bad liver! Ha Ha Ha!!!" |
"Huh?" |
Caity offers to make dinner. |
Claire works on the lab, Liza picks at
her glove. Sounds fair. |
Dani's looking hungry! |
The enzyme goes to work. |
Jackie can't handle sitting on a chair.
--And she's not posing!!!
|
Jeff almost looks natural here...except
that he's NOT WEARING HIS SAFETY GLASSES!!!!! |
Jeremy and Jason work intently on their
lab.
|
Jordan and Austin team up to get the
measurements accurate.
|
Kaylee prepares to pour her peroxide.
(Actually, she's just posing!) |
Luke checks on his experiment.
|
Keith is rather focused on the
experiment - while Danny explains his theory of what's happening. |
Kaylee displays her lack of fear of the
liver. Kayla doesn't look quite so sure of her bravery. |
|
Feeding time at the zoo.
|
I still have no idea what Austin is
doing that is so interesting to his classmates. |

We started to look at "Color Chromatography", better
known as "Tie-dyeing". Before we could even get finished with the lab,
the drains backed up, and we had a big problem on our hands. And oh! - the
stench!!!! Because we could not use the sinks for a while, this was our last
chemistry lab. But, oh , the memories!!!
Krista had an original idea - dye a
blanket!
|
Allie also had an original idea for
preparing her shirt....
|
...And it produced one of the best
results of the day! Claire's tank top was another success of the day! |
Jason and Steve stir with spoons, but
Jon's not afraid to stick his hands right in the bath!
|
Elliot was the first - and last - person
to use the "dark green". |
Looks like Ben's pulling double duty
- taking care of something in each tub! |
Steve looks forward to his black sock. |
Claire and Allie discuss techniques as
Sarah stirs and listens. |

"Domino Derby" introduced the students to motion and
forces. Their goal: calculate the average speed of falling dominoes, then change
the distance between the dominoes to see how that affects the average speed.
