The students got to discover just how powerful acids can be in
"Fried Peanuts". They stuffed polystyrene peanuts into a small amount
of acetone, which dissolved the peanuts and created a gak-like substance. Their
goal: dissolve as many peanuts as possible. For lab safety, everyone had to wear
safety glasses and gloves. Aprons, however, were optional.
Mark seems leery, but David and Steven
enjoy the lab. |
Brian, Nick, and Elliot add some more. |
These guys added so many that the
acetone slowed down, so Elliot uses some force. |
Eric and Mark get enthusiastic while
Donavon waits for the accident. |
Molly and Amy opted to wear the aprons
(not a bad choice), but Ross is too macho for that!
|
Allie works carefully, slowly adding her
peanuts one at a time. |
Although the gloves would protect her,
Caity chooses to sacrifice her pencil to pack more peanuts in her &
Mara's beaker.
|
Cory loves wearing the goggles!
Although, he really should be watching what he's doing here!! Jason's
having too much fun to even notice the camera! |
Cyndi and Keith stock-piled their
peanuts, but still ran out! |
Danny investigates the properties of
this new substance. |
The peanuts dissolve rather quickly.
It's sometimes hard to show action with a still photo. |
"Hey, Ben! This stuff's pretty
cool!"
"I'm sure it is, Eric, but I think
I have a hole in my glove! The acetone's leaking through!!" |
Jake and Austin think this lab is neat. |
Now they think this lab is awesome! |
Jamie's a bit hesitant to stick her
finger in, but Clare just dives right in! |
Jason and Caleb use caution. |
Joe and Jesse got so excited, they lost
count!
|
Katherine and Kim work to get a few more
peanuts into the beaker.
|
Katherine displays the elasticity of the
substance.
|
Kaylee and Kayla give their new
substance a squeeze. |
Considering this stuff was called
"snot", Kayla & Kaylee decided to hold theirs in Kleenex.
Kim and Brittany normally don't use Kleenex, I guess. |
The ladies deemed that last picture as
"not good enough", so we took another one. Notice I still
published the original! |
Caity is at peace with her snot. (The
day of this lab was "'60's Day".) |
Gina and Dani like to show off their
snot. |
Another case of the subjects rejecting
the original picture. |
Jamie is not thrilled about playing with
snot, but Clare is enjoying it. |
Kim hesitantly shows her snot. |
Luke gets rejuvenating energy from his
snot. |
Justin, Elliot, and Brian are mesmerized
by the flame.
|
Austin and Russell are looking
at Donavon either because he has a good idea, or out of concern for
what he might do. |
Katie and Ashley try to back away as
Katherine lights the alcohol burner. Could it be that they don't trust
her?? |
Brittany and Shawna laugh as Kim has
difficulty lighting the wick.
|
It's bad enough that I let Mike use the
burner, but David and Mark let him take charge of it!!
|
Brandon stirs his copper to expose more
of it to the heat.
|
Clare cautious - and nervously - removes
her copper from the heat. |
Eric's just happy to get to use fire in
a lab!
|
Jordan watches Eric's attempt to light
the wick. |
Jack was recording information
before I called his name! Joe just keeps stirring. |
Jamie had a bit of trouble lighting the
wick, so Casie tried to help out. |
Jason and Luke find the reaction quite
interesting! |
Jason noticed he spilled a little
copper, so he cleaned it up. His partner, Steve, noticed Dani and Sarah
sitting behind him. |
Jeremy and Jeff notice something start
to happen!
|
Steve secures his safety glasses now
that he realizes the flame is lit!
|
Joe and Nate wait for the good part.
